But why does she spend
every weekend
at rodeos here in the
dusty San Joaquin Valley
wearing jeans and cowboy boots

trying to get acquainted
with every cowboy
and bull rider
on the Western circuit

talking like a girl
who wouldn't know 
a stethoscope
if she saw one 

I have my own ideas
about this situation
from her end of a conversation 
I overheard
at the pay phone</poem>
